The funerary ideas and the popular notions of afterlife in the Islamic societies have greatly influenced the artistic expressions of the Islamic world. These include the tomb architecture as well as miniature paintings and other artworks. It is the aim of this paper to understand the fabric of these ideas and the ways in which they have shaped the nature of these artworks, especially in South Asia, in relation to other related cultural zones e.g., West Asia, Central Asia etc. Another perspective that this essay will use is that of the variation in the funerary ideas and in their artistic expressions as they get transmitted from one cultural region to another.
