“World Art” and South Asia - A Dialogue on Some Problems and Perspectives 

This dialogue between Archana Verma and Daniel Rycroft discusses some of the issues of the notion of World Art, which are essential to ponder over before formulating any narrative of this concept. The dialogue is a transcribed and edited version of an e-mail conversation. Both Daniel Rycroft and Archana Verma are art historians of South Asia. Dr. Rycroft teaches at the University of East Anglia, UK and Dr. Archana Verma is based in Delhi.



Archana – Hello Daniel, thanks for this opportunity to discuss this issue. I am apprehensive about this notion of “World Art,” which is gaining ground in the international academic arena now. I feel that all art in the world should be treated as necessarily regional and no art form any culture can be regarded as having a greater global value than the art forms from any other culture - this is a basic principal of art history which all art historians must understand...
